For your purpose you need to use SHOW TABLES LIKE statement for selecting table exists or not. If you are using mysqli class then use mysqli::query() or mysqli::query_cache() methods.
SELECT LIKE statement will display count of table which is actually exists in the database.
And for the purpose of filtering table which exist or not, using SELECT statement is more optimized than SHOW TABLES.
